Treat Yourself to Sapporo’s Closing Parfait

After a long day of traveling, there is no better way to end the day than with a delicious, one of a kind sweet treat, like a parfait! While the parfait’s origins are from France, you will be surprised by how “parfaits” are a unique and one-of-a-kind item that contributes to Sapporo’s night life.

  • “Closing Parfait?”

A “Closing Parfait” or shime-parfait is something made for the night of Sapporo, which came into trend in recent years. People tend to enjoy these delicacy after drinking parties or a long working day, and the parfait marks the end of the night, thus the name CLOSING Parfait. The culture of Sapporo closing parfait is so influential, that there is a promotional committee for it!!

At a first glance, Sapporo has numerous spots for travelling, dining, as well as shopping. However Sapporo has much more hidden within the city grounds especially when it comes to food and sweets.

Let’s Explore: Yamaneko Restaurant and Bar!

To try this “Closing Parfait” experience, I went to one of the recommended shops on the “Closing Parfait” website: the Yamaneko Restaurant and Bar, located in the back of the Sapporo Clock Tower.

I decided to indulge in Yamaneko’s S’more parfait and it was such an unforgettable experience. This S’more closing parfait contains roasted marshmallows alongside two scoops of their monthly ice cream, as well as a mocha cheesecake with cream. For 880 yen, it was well worth the experience!

This restaurant took the image of a parfait and turned it into something incredible and unique.  I rarely see roasted marshmallows in Japan, so this was such a unique treat. As the staff placed the plate on the table, they lit up a small candle on the side of the dish, and provided skewers of marshmallows to roast on the fire. The staff recommended to not put the marshmallows too close to the fire, so they will not burn and instead turn into a nice, crispy brown color. Once it is roasted, the staff recommended eating the marshmallows with the ice cream for a delicious, sweet sugary taste. Their ice cream flavors change every month depending on the season. This month the “closing parfait” included mango and chocolate ice cream in the set.

This parfait was not the only highlight of the evening. This restaurant has so much to offer with its various dishes, and it’s waiting for you to discover them one by one!
