Museums are not only a place where you can see the history or culture of a city, but are also a place to really learn and physically experience how the city was shaped from a small to a grand scale. In this blog we will be listing 5 different museums we recommend you to visit if you are traveling to Sapporo.
Located in the Sapporo Art Park in Makomanai, the Sapporo Art Park Art Museum or the Sapporo Art Museum for short has a vast collection of different styles of art, ranging from Japanese paintings, photography, oil paintings, watercolor paintings, printmaking, sculptures, and many more collections to explore! This museum is known for its seasonal exhibitions of different varieties of art, whether it be an exhibit on the modern anime works of Makoto Shinkai, the main artist behind the popular animated movie Kimi no Na Wa, or Igarashi Takenobu’s famous works on display, there are many seasonal exhibits that come and go through this museum that add to the overall experience. 【Sapporo Art Park-Sapporo Art Museum】 Address: Hokkaido, Sapporo, Minami Ward, Geijutsunomori, 2-75 Opening Hours: 9:45 to 17:00 (open until 17:30 during 6/1-8/31) * Admission ends 30 minutes before closing time. This museum is dedicated to showcasing the archives and events during the winter Olympics were held in Sapporo in 1972. Here in this museum, you can try out simulations such as the ski jump and speed skating simulation while being right next to Okurayama Ski Stadium, where some of the events of the 1972 Winter Olympics were held. This museum displays a vast collection of winter sport-related activities as well as some history about the winter Olympic Games. This is great place to go with the entire family because it combines history and the fun of winter sports all into one place! Right in the heart of the Hokkaido University campus, this museum open to the public is known for its vast collection of historical and medical research and archives. The museum has many exhibits and displays ranging from subjects like science to the history of the campus, all the way to dinosaur fossils on display! With a cozy atmosphere when you walk in, you will get to learn a lot about not just the campus or Sapporo, but about what many students and professors study here in the university. Located right next to the Sunpiazza Aquarium next to Shin Sapporo Subway Station, this science center combines fun with learning about our universe in this interactive environment. There are two parts of this science center. One is the exhibition hall, which is filled with about 200 interactive exhibits that show how our universe works and the science behind it. The second part of the science center is home to Hokkaido’s largest planetarium, and has many different shows you can see on screen! This Historical Village, located just outside of the center city section of Sapporo, is a great place to truly delve into Hokkaido’s history and truly feel like you time traveled into a different era once you step inside! This Historical Village is open-air museum where you will get a chance to learn more about the development of towns in Hokkaido specifically getting a chance to see how buildings in Hokkaido were in the Meiji and Taisho periods or the mid-19th to early 20th century. This open-air museum also showcases various historical buildings, including the old Sapporo Station building right at the main entrance to the village. Popular attractions here include the horse-drawn trolley as well as visit several parts of the village such as: the fishing village, the farm village, the town area, and the mountain village.
