If you’re visiting Hokkaido and want to enjoy nature without spending a whole day, Shioya Maruyama (629m) in Otaru is the perfect choice.
This beginner-friendly hiking spot is just a short trip from Sapporo, offering breathtaking ocean views and the famous Shakotan Blue from the summit.
True to its name, “Maruyama” (round mountain), it has a gentle, rounded shape and is popular for its easy-to-climb trail.
Thanks to its accessibility and stunning scenery, Shioya Maruyama is one of the best short hikes for beginners and families near Sapporo.

The trail is mostly flat and gentle, without long steep climbs.
Red ribbons are tied along the trees, so the trail is clearly marked and easy to follow.
Only at the very end, there is a short section where you climb over some rocky terrain. However, this rocky part is brief and not technically difficult, so most hikers can pass without any problem.

The biggest attraction of Shioya Maruyama is the 360-degree panoramic view from the summit:

From the parking lot, pass under the overpass and turn right to reach the trailhead. An entry registration sheet is provided at the start of the trail—sign in before you begin your hike.
