【2024 June】Discover Hokkaido's June Events / YOSAKOI Soran / Sapporo Festival / TOYAKO Manga and Anime Festa

June is an exciting month in Sapporo and Hokkaido, packed with vibrant festivals and cultural events. There is a lot of fun from traditional dance festivals to food celebrations. 

Here are some highlights to look forward to:

 

Upcoming Events in Sapporo

33rd YOSAKOI Soran Festival @ Odori Park and Various Locations

The YOSAKOI Soran Festival is a captivating fusion of Japan's traditional Yosakoi dance and Hokkaido's folk song "Soran Bushi." This year, 27,000 dancers will perform at various locations throughout Sapporo, with the main stage at Odori Park. Expect dynamic choreography, vibrant costumes, and an electrifying atmosphere as teams compete and showcase their talents.

 

Hokudai Festival @ Hokkaido University

The Hokudai Festival at Hokkaido University's Sapporo campus is a festival created by university students. The Hokudai Festival includes food trucks, a dance stage, and a traditional musical instrument experience.

The highlight of the event is the "International Food Festival" (IFF), where international students serve traditional dishes from around the world. It's a fantastic opportunity to sample diverse cuisines and experience the global community within Sapporo.

2. Bringing alcohol and smoking are prohibited.

 

Sapporo Festival @ Hokkaido Shrine and Nakajima Park

With over 100 years of history, the Sapporo Festival (Sapporo Matsuri) is a beloved local tradition. The festivities are held at Hokkaido Shrine and Nakajima Park, featuring numerous food stalls and traditional activities. 

14th (Fri): The religious ceremony of the day before
There will be performances such as jazz concerts, Japanese drum performances, and traditional dances at Hokkaido shrine.

15th (Sat): The most important festival at Hokkaido Shrine
There will be performances such as Japanese traditional musical, concert and dances at Hokkaido shrine.

16th (Sun): People carry Mikoshi (portable shrines) through the city, creating a lively and spirited atmosphere. Mikoshi will depart from Hokkaido Shrine at 9 AM, parade through downtown Sapporo, and stop once at Tōngu (A detached shrine). It will then depart again around 1 PM and return to Hokkaido Shrine.

 

Flower Festival Sapporo @ Odori Park

Odori Park will be in full bloom during the Flower Festival Sapporo, stretching from Nish 4 block to 8 block. This event showcases a gardening contest, potted flowers, and a variety of gardening goods for sale. It’s a perfect outing for flower lovers.

 

Animage and Ghibli Exhibition @ Factory 

Anime fans will not want to miss the Animage and Ghibli Exhibition at Sapporo Factory. This exhibition focuses on anime from the 1980s, offering a nostalgic journey through the early works of Studio Ghibli and other iconic animations.

Junior and senior high school students: 1,000 yen
Elementary school students: 600 yen
Preschool children: free

 

Upcoming Events in other cities of Hokkaido

TOYAKO Manga and Anime Festa @ Lake Toya, Iburi District

The Lake Toya Onsen area transforms into an anime and manga paradise during the TOYAKO Manga and Anime Festa. The event features a cosplay parade and DJ events, making it a vibrant gathering for anime and manga enthusiasts. Whether you're a dedicated cosplayer or a casual fan, you'll find plenty to enjoy.

During the event, a direct bus will run from Sapporo to Lake Toya!

Kaimono Koen Festival @ Asahikawa

The Kaimono Koen Festival in Asahikawa offers a delightful mix of local performances, a flea market, food stalls, and various other events. It’s a great way to experience the local culture and enjoy a lively weekend in the city.

 

Shikotsuko Lake Festival @ Lake Shikotsu, Chitose

Held at Lake Shikotsu, this summer festival features stage performances including street performers and taiko drumming. Surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Shikotsuko National Park, you can also savor freshly grilled "Shikotsuko chippu" (red salmon). It's a perfect opportunity to enjoy the refreshing early summer at Lake Shikotsu.

 

Tokachidake Mountain Opening @ Kamifurano, Kamikawa District

Tokachidake Mountain will be permitted for trekking on June 21st. A memorial climb is scheduled for the day, and participants will receive a hot spring ticket for Tokachidake Onsen after descending.
